AFL locks in Eagles’ season opener for February 30 due to overwhelming interest

Eagles fans are in for a special treat with the AFL announcing a new Round -1 where the West Coast Eagles will play the mighty Richmond tigers on the 30th February 2026. An AFL first due to “overwhelming interest”.

The move comes after Eagles’ fans reacted with joy at being given a 9:30am fixture in round 3. It was clear that the Eagles were once again ready for the prime time.

A source close to the AFL told The Times,

“Eagles games are and have always been the number one priority for the AFL. They are advertising powerhouses and people from all over the nation tune in to watch the big birds fly. So we thought we’d give them an extra special fixture”

The match will kick off at 25:30 – a time normally reserved for only the finest spectacles on Earth. We spoke to an Eagles fan who told The Times,

“I think I told the misso I was going to clear the guttters on the 30th February so I guess I have an excuse to skip that now ha ha, yeah, car’n the Eagles!!”

Some “Eagle eyed” fans have questioned the logic of the Round -1 fixture however. With one fan saying the fixture would clash with both the annual Clive Palmer Appreciation Day celebrations and Merge Awareness Day which fall on the same date.

The AFL has apologised for the clash but conceded that it’s just a part of being a diehard West Coast Fan lately – having to make hard choices every single week.

Fair enough really.
