The City of Perth will vote on a proposal to merge McIver & Claisebrook trainos with a single “transport hub” which they believe better serves the high-density apartments in the area.
McIver famously, or infamously, serves East Perth, most notable allowing access to Royal Perth Hospital. Whereas Claisebrook does something or rather. No one really knows.
Drawing on inspiration from the recent Midland traino, they also propose to provide “convenient parking facilities” close to the proposed merged station in nearby Alkimos.
We spoke to a prominent urban designer who said while stations in East Perth relied on parking less than outer suburban train stations it didn’t mean they didn’t also need something within walking distance. Adding,
“Not everyone has the luxury of living within walking distance to a train station so we need parking. Obviously, something in East Perth is out of the question because you’re not going to snatch that kind of land out of developers hands to build wanky apartments no one can afford, so I think Alkimos is a good compromise”
Passengers will be thrilled at only having to allow a modest 10 hours to get to the train station from their cars.
Naturally, not everyone is happy with such convenience with one cooker telling The Times that this sort of amenity was exactly what 15-minute cities were all about. Adding,
“Yeah, yeah, yeah, they all just want us in the same area to control us! If they were serious about stopping the great reset they’d make sure the car park was in Geraldton!”
Fair enough.
