The Australian Government has announced tough new penalties for any fuel companies thinking of price gouging customers during this period of global instability.
The Government released the following statement straight to The Times,
“Fuel companies are not going to get away with it. That’s why we are making this offer of one price gouging penalty of $100M or 2fa $189.99M. We believe this is the only language petrol stations understand”
Some in the community are sceptical about the new fines saying that they are basically throwing money away by not committing two offences. With one analyst telling The Times,
“Look at the savings! The second gouge will be extra sweet based on the savings made. I reckon the Government is incentivising petrol companies to break the law!”
Another analyst told us that the 2fa special has done more damage to the average household budget than any price hike on fuel and argues it will be giving the petrol companies a taste of their own medicine. Adding,
“Just like they do to us, you weaponise greed and then make them pay more than they otherwise would”
True.
