AFL allow Freo to wear gold numbers for breaking WA sports clubs winning streak record

The AFL has shaken its VFL reputation by acknowledging one of the greatest achievements by a footy club in recent memory.

Yep, the Fremantle Dockers have surpassed all rivals to break the major WA footy club winning streak – 14 games in a row.

The previous record was set by the might West Coast Fever who won 13 in 2025 and the West Coast Eagles winning 12 in 1991.

To honour the achievement, the AFL has permitted the Dockers to wear gold numbers for the remainder of the season until they get beaten. Which if you look at their current form may be some time in 2070.

We spoke to an AFL insider who said they rarely allowed such garish frivolities, but this was something quite special. Adding,

“I don’t think you can find a single young person in Australia that hasn’t had aspirations of breaking the major WA sporting club winning streak record, it’s up there with the Brownlow I reckon so the AFL had to respond with the respect it was due”

Naturally, some Victorians have got their dicks in a knot over the move. Claiming that the fact Fremantle had to travel to win this award means it should be invalidated. Given the “nature” of gold numbers.

We spoke to one Vic grub who told The Times,

“Let’s see if they could break the record if they weren’t allowed to play away from Perth Stadium! They wouldn’t! Playing every game at home is a disadvantage at least according to the Victorian brain”

Makes sense.
