The AFL has announced that it has devised an ingenius new way to kick off the 2027 season after deciding to scrap its much loved Round 0 concept.
After a ripper 2 years, the AFL says it’s time to trial something “groundbreaking” – round 1. I can already hear the howls of disparagement so bear with them a minute.
Picture this: the first round of the AFL season to be feature every team in a variety of states to ensure a consistent and fair competition. Pretty radical stuff really.
We spoke to an industry insider who said the idea had legs but the fans were obviously going to miss the current round 0 format. Adding,
“The AFL gets criticised for trying new things so obviously Round 1 is going to cop a lot of flack. I reckon the fans are just going to have to roll with it and maybe expand their horizons a little, it’s a solid format”
Naturally, the bolted-on boomer market is up in arms about the proposed change. With one old cobber saying Round 0 is how the game SHOULD be played and Round 1 is just woke nonsense.
We spoke to such a footy boomer who told The Times,
“What’s next? A nancyboy round? That’s what’s going to happen if you start eroding the foundations of the great game, are children really supposed to just watch Round 1 and think that’s OK to live like that?”
He raises a compelling point.
