Albo is in Perth today to personally assure Western Australia that the rumours around Scott Pendlebury getting a share of our GST for his 433rd game are untrue.
It is, however, true that the VFL has been lobbying the Government flat-out trying to get Pendlebury a share of all state’s GST, with one insider saying it had been “relentless”, adding,
“There is serious belief in the VFL that the Nation isn’t making big enough a deal about this game and that the man of the hour isn’t making enough coin from it. According to the lobby it would be a small gesture to give Pendles a share of the GST to go on top of all his gold jumper money”
The news has come as music to the ears of Western Australians who are already uneasy about a player reaping financial gain from a game outside the salary cap. Typically, a very taboo thing to do in the AFL.
The VFL made a last-ditch effort to get their proposal over the line by confronting the PM at Perth Airport and telling him that if they agree to a measly 10% to Pendlebury he’ll donate some to charity.
The PM held firm.
