Holy shit, they have gone and done it! The VFL (or AFL to naive) has made a bombshell ruling that the semi-final between Freo and Cats must be replayed due to “substantial bias against a Victorian team” by ARC.
The decision comes after immense backlash over the decision which Victoria believe cost Geelong the game. A source close to the Leauge told The Times,
“It’s pretty obvious, if the Dempsey goal was paid then the Cats would’ve been riding a wave of momentum and won by like 50 points, no question in any Victorian’s mind, it’s an injustice and it just be corrected”
The shock decision has certainly put a spanner in the works given Freo were due to face Sydney next weekend. According to the VFL the new finals structure will be thusly,
“The rematch will be played in 4 days and if Freo win they will have to go on to play their game against Sydney as scheduled however if Geelong rightly win then everything will need to be pushed back a week to give them a chance to progress to the Grand Final. This is the fairest solution we can think of right now”
Some have suggested that this is incredibly unfair to Freo who may have to play 2 high-intensity finals games within days of each other.
However, the VFL says it’s a small sacrifice given how much hurt the ARC decision has caused the home of footy.
